You probably already know the many cardiovascular benefits cycling can bring to your heart health. Whether you like to ride greenways, roads, or mountain trails, just 30 minutes on your bike can improve your circulation, strength, mobility, and even your mood! However, there are other benefits of cycling you may not be aware of:
1. You’ll live longer!
A Danish study found that 40% of those who cycled had a decreased risk of dying from what they call “all-cause mortality” which in laymen’s terms means cycling may help you to live longer!
2. You’ll reduce heart disease risks!
Riding your bike helps improve your heart and circulatory health, but when you increase your cycling intensity, you reduce your risk of dying from heart disease or stroke. When researchers examined that same study, they found that those in the study who cycled at an average or fast intensity—think of it similar to a “brisk” walk—lived longer!
3. You can help others by cycling!
October 29 th is World Stroke Day and the American Stroke Association and American Heart Association are hosting a digital celebration and fundraiser! Ride your bike outdoors, in front of your TV, or even go for a walk if you don’t own a bike. One CycleNation’s goal is to bring everyone together to ride a million miles and raise a million dollars for stroke research, treatment, and awareness.
As more and more cities add cycle lanes, greenways, and mountain bike trails, cycling is a great way for anyone, of any age, to improve their health year-round and, on World Stroke Day, show that they care and support the American Heart Association!
