Find out why Nickole had a subarachnoid hemorrhagic stroke in her 30s, a time when she felt she was young and healthy and not at risk of stroke, of all things, and find out how she has recovered today to find a more centered, positive sense of self.

In July 2012 at the age of 35 (without prior symptoms except hypertension), I had a subarachnoid

hemorrhagic stroke: An aneurysm I wasn’t aware of burst between my brain and skull. If not treated immediately, this type of stroke can lead to paralysis, coma or even death. Fortunately, I was quickly taken to the hospital, given treatment, and received surgery and care in ICU.

What caused this radical event in such a young person? Although I didn’t think I was too unhealthy, suggestions from my neurosurgeon and my own reflection showed a different picture: High blood pressure and strokes run in my family; I might have what is termed “elastic arteries” that can predispose to aneurysms; I had hypertension for years and took medication; and I took oral birth control for a decade. Additionally, I chose to endure years of extreme stress from an unhappy marriage with a partner with a severe drug addiction and I practiced substandard self-care and co-dependent, self-critical behaviors without seeking help for years.

Three months after the stroke, the neurosurgeon said that along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, I am fine to return to all regular activities. And my physician recently told me that I basically have the health of a normal person and it was just a matter of lowering blood pressure, lessening stress, eating well, and letting my body heal. I also went to a therapist, co-dependent meetings and began choosing healthier behaviors, self-care, and lifestyle.

The eight months following my stroke brought other big challenges: severe headaches, back and sciatica pain, partial voice loss, temporary Bell’s palsy (facial paralysis) and mental and emotional effects. But because of the amazing care from health care professionals, my wonderful family, and my own determination, I’ve been blessed to make a full recovery.

These choices helped me revive my centered, confident, positive, and caring self. I am deeply grateful for being given another chance to appreciate the connection and beauty of life and, most importantly, rediscover the value of self-care.

I hope my story empowers others to reflect on unhealthy behaviors or stress they may perpetuate or tolerate from others, and to be inspired towards healthier, happier, more vibrant wellness!

In Peace, Light & Joy,

Nickole
